Driving on the left: the British legacy

Surprise number one: in Mauritius, you drive on the left. The island was a British colony until 1968. The steering wheel is on the right, and roundabouts work the opposite way to mainland Europe. Don’t panic: most visitors adapt within an hour or two. Take your time over the first few kilometres.

Driving licence required

Your valid national licence is accepted. An international permit is not required for EU citizens (though some agencies may ask for one as a precaution). The minimum age is generally 21 to 23 with at least two years of driving experience.

Road conditions and navigation

The network is good on the main routes (M1, M2). Secondary roads (Chamarel, Rivière Noire) can be narrow and winding. Avoid driving at night on these roads. Speed limits: 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h out of town, 110 km/h on the motorway. Google Maps works very well — download the offline map.

Fuel and parking

Petrol stations are plentiful, generally open until 8pm-10pm. Parking is free at the vast majority of tourist sites. In Grand Baie or Flic en Flac at weekends, arrive early.
