Ebony Forest Chamarel — Endemic Canopy

In the heights of Chamarel, a restored endemic ebony forest with canopy walkways ten metres above the trees and a sweeping view over the western lagoon.

I take very few people here because very few people know about it. Ebony Forest Chamarel is a private 50-hectare endemic forest under active restoration, with canopy walkways running ten metres above the treetops. On a clear day, the view over the west coast is something else.

The forest shelters species you’ll find nowhere else: Mauritius ebony, bois de natte, bois d’olive, day geckos of the Phelsuma family. The project is run by passionate conservationists — the guides know every tree by name and explain the restoration programme with rare conviction.

The excursion is short (about 2 hours) but intense. Best done in the morning, paired with the Seven Coloured Earths or Chamarel Waterfall nearby. I handle the entrance and transport from your hotel.
