Black River Gorges & Plaine Champagne — Hike
A hike into the green heart of Mauritius: ancient rainforest, volcanic ridgelines and wild views across Plaine Champagne.
Black River Gorges National Park is the other face of Mauritius — far from lagoons and resorts. Here it’s 6,700 hectares of endemic forest, deer crossing the trails, echo parakeets calling from the canopy. I love this place for exactly one reason: you genuinely have it to yourself.
The hike starts at Black River and climbs steadily towards Plaine Champagne. The trail is well-marked but demands real effort — around 10 km return with elevation gain. Intermediate viewpoints reward every push: valley, forest stretching to the horizon, the silhouette of Rempart Mountain in the distance.
I provide directions, the GPS trail and can arrange transport. Let me know if you’d prefer a local guide — I know the best ones.
