Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths, Grand Bassin & Gorges
The great South-West tour: Chamarel's famous Seven Coloured Earths, the sacred lake of Grand Bassin and the breathtaking viewpoints over Black River Gorges.
I take you on what I consider the unmissable land circuit in Mauritius. Chamarel is a unique geological phenomenon: seven colours in the earth — from brick red to violet — shaped by the cooling of volcanic lava. No two visits look the same in the morning light.
Then we head to Grand Bassin — a volcanic lake perched at 700 m altitude, a major Hindu pilgrimage site surrounded by colourful temples. The atmosphere is striking, even for non-believers. We round off at Black River Gorges viewpoints, looking down over untouched rainforest and a valley that genuinely takes your breath away.
I organise the driver, entrance fees and photo stops. You just look and enjoy. The day is short but full — bring comfortable shoes.
