Chamarel

Currently: 4 excursions

Chamarel is the most visited village in the south, for three reasons: the seven-coloured earth, dunes of volcanic sand that never mix; the nearby waterfall, the island’s highest; and the rum distillery, set among cane fields and pineapples.

The road up is worth the trip on its own: it crosses the Black River Gorges national park, with views over the whole south-west coast.

All my southern tours come through here. Allow a full day from the north: it is far, but nobody regrets it.
