Curepipe is the highland town, five hundred metres up. It is cooler than the coast and it rains often: Mauritians joke about it, but that is why the vegetation is so dense.
You stop here for Trou aux Cerfs, the crater of an extinct volcano you can walk around, with views over the whole island on a clear day, and for the model-ship and cashmere shops.
It is a stop, not a destination. It appears in most of my southern tours.
