Mauritius: formalities, currency and practical tips

Preparing a trip to Mauritius also means making sure the practical aspects are sorted before departure. Visa or not? Which currency? Which plugs? We answer all these questions so you arrive with peace of mind.

Entering the country: formalities for visitors

Passport and length of stay

Good news: EU citizens do not need a visa for a tourist stay, up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for the whole duration of your stay (6 months’ remaining validity recommended).

Online arrival card

A digital arrival card must be completed before the flight on the official portal of the Mauritian authorities. Have the address of your accommodation to hand. To avoid the stress of the taxi rank on arrival, opt for a private transfer.

Currency: the Mauritian rupee (MUR)

The official currency is the Mauritian rupee (MUR), about €1 = 48 to 52 MUR. Don’t exchange money at home (unfavourable rates). For budgets, see Mauritius travel budget.

• Banks (MCB, SBM): excellent rates, weekdays 9am-3pm.
• ATMs: very widespread, accept Visa/Mastercard.

Languages spoken

French is understood and spoken everywhere. English is used in administrations. The mother tongue is Mauritian Creole. A few words of Creole are always appreciated.

Electricity and plugs

Mauritius uses the British standard: type G plugs (three rectangular pins), 230V. Your European devices work but you’ll need an adapter (buy it at home).

Water and food

The tap water is drinkable in hotels and urban areas. As a precaution, many prefer bottled water (less than 30 MUR for 1.5L). Mauritian cuisine is flavourful and multicultural.

Health and vaccines

No mandatory vaccines from Europe. Recommended vaccinations: up-to-date DTP, hepatitis A. Dengue is present (daytime mosquitoes): use a repellent. Malaria is not present. Take out travel insurance with repatriation.

Time difference

Mauritius is at UTC+4: +3h ahead of mainland Europe in winter, +2h in summer. Minimal jet lag, easy for children.

Safety

A generally safe destination. Some petty theft occurs: don’t leave valuables in sight. Beware of currents in areas not protected by the lagoon (Souillac, Gris-Gris). To choose your region, see which region to choose.

Internet and local SIM

Excellent 4G coverage. Emtel and My.t offer prepaid SIMs at the airport (around 500 MUR for 10 GB). Wi-Fi is included in almost all hotels.
