Mahebourg’s naval museum tells a story few visitors know: the battle of Vieux Grand Port in 1810, the only French naval victory inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe. The museum holds objects raised from the wrecks, including the bell of the Saint-Geran, the shipwreck that inspired Paul et Virginie.
The afternoon shifts completely: a boat to Ile des Deux Cocos, a private islet set in the Blue Bay lagoon, with a pavilion built by a former British governor. Lunch, snorkelling in the marine park, and the day slips by.
I recommend this for travellers who want to understand the island as much as sunbathe on it. Mahebourg is in the south-east — about 1h30 from the north, which is the only drawback.
