The south is the part of Mauritius that looks least like a postcard, and that is exactly what makes it the best ground for a day tour. The Black River gorges, the seven-coloured earth of Chamarel, the sacred lake of Grand Bassin: you come here for the landscape and the history, not for the beach.
It is also where the island’s quietest hotels are, around Bel Ombre and Blue Bay, along with the lagoon of Le Morne, a World Heritage site.
I am based in the north, but the south is an hour and a half away and most of my guests spend at least one day there. Here are the excursions that cross it, and the hotels I work with on that coast.
